What made the legion of demons so terrified of Jesus?
In this powerful biblical exposition, Sam Shamoun walks through Luke 8, Mark 5, and Matthew 8 to examine what happened when Jesus encountered a demon-possessed man. The demons immediately recognized who stood before them. They knew Jesus was the Son of God, they knew He had absolute authority over them, and they knew that a future day of judgment had already been appointed.
They cried out:
“What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” — Matthew 8:29
In Luke’s account, the demons begged Jesus not to command them to depart into the abyss (Luke 8:31). Why were these powerful spiritual beings terrified of Him?
Because Jesus Christ is not merely a prophet, teacher, miracle worker, or created heavenly messenger.
Jesus Christ is Lord over everything.
Scripture declares:
“For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him.” — Colossians 1:16
And:
“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” — Colossians 1:17
The Gospel of John tells us:
“All things were made through Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made.” — John 1:3
Jesus Himself declared:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” — Matthew 28:18
This means His authority extends far beyond the physical world we can see. Angels are under His authority. Demons are under His authority. Satan is under His authority. Death is under His authority. Judgment belongs to Him. Every power in the spiritual realm ultimately answers to Jesus Christ.
Philippians 2:10–11 tells us that at the name of Jesus:
“Every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.”
That helps explain the terrifying reality confronting the demons in the Gospels. They knew exactly who Jesus was.
They also knew where they could ultimately be sent.
Revelation 9 describes the bottomless pit, or abyss, while Revelation 20 describes Satan’s confinement and the final judgment. The demons understood that Jesus possessed the authority to judge and confine them—and they knew that an appointed time of judgment was coming.
But there is an important warning here for every one of us:
Simply knowing who Jesus is is not the same as belonging to Jesus.
The demons recognized Him. They knew His authority. They feared His judgment. Yet they were still His enemies.
James 2:19 says:
“You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!”
The question, therefore, is not simply:
Do you believe Jesus existed?
The question is:
Do you know Him? Have you trusted Him? Have you surrendered your life to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior?
The same Jesus whom demons feared is the Savior who willingly went to the cross for sinners.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16
Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. Through Him there is forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and eternal life.
Jesus said:
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6
IF YOU DON’T KNOW JESUS CHRIST
You do not need to clean yourself up before coming to Him.
Recognize that you are a sinner in need of a Savior. Turn from your sin and place your faith in Jesus Christ—trusting in His death and resurrection rather than your own goodness to save you.
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” — Acts 16:31
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” — Romans 10:13
You can call upon Him right now:
“Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself. I believe You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins, and that You rose from the dead. I turn to You and put my trust in You. Forgive me, change me, and lead my life. I receive You as my Lord and Savior. Amen.”
The prayer itself does not save you—Jesus saves. Salvation is God’s gift received through faith in Christ.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8
If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, begin reading His Word, pray, and seek a faithful Bible-believing church where you can grow in your relationship with Him.
Jesus Christ is not merely Lord over what we can see. He is Lord over heaven and earth, the visible and invisible, life and death, angels and demons—and one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
